Judgement reserved in Secret Ballot ruling

Secret Ballot or Not? The Constitutional Court reserves judgment following a lengthy secret ballot hearing.

The Country’s highest court on the Land, Constitutional Court heard arguments on whether the Parliament’s National Assembly should adopt the Secret ballot vote in the Motion of No Confidence against President Jacob Zuma or not.

Opposition parties and civil rights groups argues Parliament should adopt the Secret Ballot vote for protection of the Mp’s while President and Parliamentary Speaker argued against it.

The court adjourned following lengthy submissions by the United Democratic Movement (UDM) represented by Adv Dali Mpofu and the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) represented by Adv Ngcukaitobi who seek the court to compel the National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to allow the secret ballot vote.

The motion of no Confidence against President Zuma was brought into parliament by the Democratic Alliance following the recent cabinet reshuffle which led the country to junk status.
