The Brazilian had one more year remaining on a two-year deal with the Italian champions, but Juve chief executive Beppe Marotta said they have agreed to let him go.

According to ESPN FC, were told by sources  that City boss Pep Guardiola wants to be reunited with Alves, who he managed at Barca, and talks over a deal can now begin.

Marotta was quoted in Tuttosport saying: “We’re not talking about a breakdown in the relationship, it’s motivation that is fundamental for players.

“Alves has realised he has a desire to try a new experience, so we’re trying to reach a mutual termination of his contract and we wish him good luck.

“There’s certainly sadness because of what’s been said, but I can confirm there’s been no breakdown in our relationship.”

Premier League champions Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Alves, but the 34-year-old is expected to choose to work with Guardiola — a coach he has hailed in the past.

Meanwhile Alves may not be the only right-back to join the club this summer with City heavily linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker, although there has been no breakthrough over an agreement yet.

Guardiola allowed both veteran right-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna to leave at the end of the season when their contracts expired.
