Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has condemned the killing of DA ward councilor Xolile Gwengxu.
Maimane attended a memorial service for the murdered counselor in Philippi on Wednesday.

Family and friends filled the Philippi East Community Hall to honor the life of Gwangxu.
DA leaders and colleagues praised Gwangxu for serving the community right until his violent death.
Maimane says officials will soon begin the investigation into the death of the counselor and it is not yet proven whether this incident is politically motivated.
“Let South Africans recognize that political killings are not something that should be happening in a democratic South Africa.”
Maimane commended Gwangxu for the service he delivered to the community of Philippi.
“Councillor Xoli set an example to what service to the people is and ensuring that ultimately he did everything in his power to put people first.”
Police have yet to find the gunman who shot Gwangxu at point blank range.
