Mayor charged with alleged shoplifting of shoes

Pongola Deputy Mayor, Councillor Busi Mvelasi, has had a criminal charge laid against her after allegedly stealing a pair of shoes from Mr Matatata’s – general clothing/sports supply shop located within the town.

According to local Democratic Alliance (DA) councilor, Kobus Theron, the charges were laid at the Pongola police station last week. The CAS number is 248/05/2017.

In the event that the Deputy Mayor is found guilty of shoplifting it would be a new all-time new low, even for the ANC.

The DA said it will request a formal investigation by the Municipal Speaker and if found guilty, we will move to have Councillor Mvelasi removed from her post as Deputy Mayor and as a Member of the Municipality’s Executive Committee.

“As a public representative, the Deputy Mayor should be without reproach. That she has even been linked to and had a case opened against her for stealing a pair of shoes is shocking and has brought the municipality’s name into further disrepute.” said DA
