Mamelodi Sundowns FC star has been awarded the “Footballer Of The Year Award” by his country’s footballing federation following his club and national form.
Mamelodi Sundowns top goalkeeper Denis “Vala” Onyango has been voted Uganda’s Footballer of the Year 2015 by that country’s top sports journalists in the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) for his performances between the sticks for both Mamelodi Sundowns and the Uganda national team.
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper beat another fan favourite in Ugandan football Farouk Miya to the award to become the first goalkeeper to win the award since the its inception in 1979.
A jubilant Onyango said that he was grateful to his teammates at Mamelodi Sundowns who “contributed to this award as we won both the Nedbank Cup and the Telkom Knockout in 2015.”
“Also, the Uganda national team, The Cranes, put in some outstanding performances,” he added.
He dedicated the award to his Uganda teammate Dhaira Abbey who passed away recently.
