Meadownlands Police Station Commander gunned down at his home in Protea South, Soweto, last night. The Station Commander was alleged ambushed by unknown gun men while entering his home.
Police have confirmed that the motive of the shooting is unknown, and that investigations are currently underway.
Gauteng Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, Sochayile Khanyile, has strongly condemned the senseless killing of the Meadownlands Police Station Commander.
Khanyile said violence against police officers was worrying and highly unacceptable.
“Police Officers are charged with the responsibility of protecting and securing the safety and security of citizens, and any attack on them places the safety of South Africans at risk.
“We urge law enforcement agencies in the province to move with speed in bringing to book those responsible for this senseless act and send a strong message that any attack on police officers is an attack on the safety of our communities and must never be tolerated.
“We call upon anyone who might have information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for this merciless act to provide this information to the police,” he continued.
Khanyile, has on behalf of the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, extended sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased Station Commander.
