The Limpopo government has confirmed that Vuwani has been declared a disaster area by the district municipality.

This comes after Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has announced the education department does not have the budget to rebuild the 22 schools that were burnt in Vuwani .

Earlier on Tuesday the Minster urged municipalities to declare the issue as a national disaster, to allow the Limpopo government to free up money to rebuild the schools.

Motsheka said the R22.528 billion given to the department will not allow them to have money to spare for the schools burnt.

“There is no money … (for the Vuwani schools in this budget) … We just can’t afford even a cent from our budget,” said the Minister.

A minimum of R30 million is needed to fix one school and the department has worked out around R200 million will be needed to rebuild all the gutted schools.
